Information on Shark Attacks
Shark attacks can happen at any time in any ocean throughout the world. No ocean users are discriminated against. People have been attacked while, swimming, diving snorkelling, surfing and also working within our oceans.

Each year there are around 50 to 70 confirmed shark attacks worldwide, of which 5 to 20 shark attack are fatal. In recent times these numbers have risen, most probably because humans are increasingly using the ocean for work and play, fish stocks are dwindling and their main source of seals are more protected than they used to be.

There are only about 16 - 20 species of shark that can be considered dangerous to man, with about the same number that should be treated as potentially dangerous. It is often difficult for sharks to be identified from an attack, as up to 50% of shark attack victims do not see the shark before the attack. Eyewitnesses, the size and marks left by bites, or teeth left behind help to identify the type of shark, but the actual type of shark identified is often only limited to the family of sharks. The Great White is held responsible for approximately a third of all attacks. The Bull, Tiger shark and Oceanic Whitetip shark make up the majority of the remainder of attacks.

Most shark attacks occur in the USA, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, the Mediterranean and Hawaii.

Our shark deterrent system prevents the risk of shark attacks, allowing all ocean users to play and work in safety. Other products such as shark repellent chemicals, shark stickers and shark nets have also been produced and sold. All these products are not 100% proven and can have a negative effect on the environment.

Nets can also lead to the catching and killing of both sharks and other marine animals (including whales, dolphins, turtles and other fish species) that pose no threat to humans.
